Making Contact
There are many options available when it comes to the contact information you provide on your site. It is best to include as much as possible in order to prove your legitimacy as a business to your customers.
Your first option is to have an E-mail address. This is probably the fastest and cheapest way for a potential customer to get in contact with you at any time.
It is probably best not to use the likes of hotmail, aol or yahoo e-mail addresses, but would be better to set up a mail redirect address with your host, so that on the website it looks more like , as an example. It’s also good practice to disguise your email address as some programs will go into your mailto links, and it looks more professional and legitimate than using your personal email.
Another detail you can give on your contact information is a telephone number. This provides customers with immediate help, they can check information about the website, track orders and it also again helps with the credibility of your website.
• If you are working from home, you probably don’t want to give out your personal number. You could try installing a private line or getting a paying, freecall or lowcall number.
The third option is putting your address on your website. This shows a customer that you are not anonymous, and that you can be contacted should there be problems with goods that need to be sent back etc.
As with your the rest of your personal details, it is probably best not to give out your personal address if you are working from home. You might want to look into investing in a business address if this is the case. For help setting a business address up, just type ‘business address’ into any good search engine and it will come up with a list of possibilities.
You would do best to put your contact details at the top or bottom of every page, as this is where customers expect to find them. You should at least have your email address on every page.
You could have a separate ‘contact s’ page instead, however, my advice is to have this in addition to some sort of contact information on every page. Better to have too much information on how your customers can contact you if they have a problem than not to be able to get in touch with you at all.
Also, you should note that it is a legal requirement in the UK to have your contact details somewhere on your site. If you don’t and someone complains about you to trading standards, you could well end up in a difficult situation.
Another legal necessity is to make sure your whois details are complete and up to date. If you get this wrong you could end up with your domain blocked.
