Do we always need cutting edge technology?
Cutting Edge Technology – Is it always necessary?
There are so many new “cutting edge” features out there these days that it can be difficult deciding what is necessary and which one to use. So, before you decide to write your pages with one specific type, think about these things:
How many of the ‘new features’ do you already have?
Too many gizmos, flashing lights and special effects can actually be a turn off for your visitor rather than impressing them. Another thing to bear in mind is that some effects, like java applets for instance, can take up system memory on your visitors’ computer and ultimately cause their browser to crash. Therefore, a good general rule is to only have ONE effect of any kind on each page of your site. Whether this is a video, music, animation etc, is up to you.
What do you want the effect to achieve?
Make sure that you are constantly thinking about the purpose of your page when you are designing it. If you want to try and get your visitor to notice something they may well have passed over if you didn’t call attention to it, then use a special effect. If you use special effects for a purpose, then they will always add to your page instead of detract from it, unless you go too far and use too many special effects.
Can older technology achieve the same effect?
Remember, not all your visitors are going to have the same “cutting edge” technology as you, and therefore may not be able to access some of the amazing features you plan to use on your pages. So try to use some of the older effects where possible to make sure that everyone can see them. The more non-specific you make your browser, the more readers you will have.
Still want a browser specific effect? How will others see your page?
You may want your reader to view your site using Internet Explorer, but if other browser types, like Safari and Firefox try to view your site and nothing happens, you have just lost a visitor that you could have kept if you had been bothered to add just a little more to your sites HTML.

So when you are creating your effects, bear in mind that others may not be able to see them. Many effect do have built-in support for non-compliant browsers. Eg, if you want to include text inside an <iframe> tag that can explain to viewers what the non-iframe compatible browser is that they need to access the site.
